This morning, Year 8 students were enthused by the visit of Matthew Shiell, a storyboard artist and illustrator living in Dublin, Ireland. Matthew came to speak about his diagnosis of ADHD and how he copes with it daily as a person and as a professional. Being diagnosed only at a later age in his twenties, Matthew was able to share some very interesting insights into how the brain of children and adults with ADHD functions quite differently. Speaking about ‘time blindness’, how way too much information coming in really is a struggle in terms of filtering and selecting what is important, Matthew gave us a good idea of how he has been able to cope with ADHD, and how he volunteers for online support groups to help people with ADHD. Apart from this, he also shared some amazing examples on how his story-boarding can be very helpful for people to visualize how for example a film making project will look like. Matthew also raised awareness on how to deal with the huge amount of (fake) information that we get fed every day. Thank you very much Matthew for offering this amazing opportunity to our students!
