Strengthening Community and Enhancing Student Learning

Welcome to the OIS Parent Council. In early 2023, inspired by a Parent Coffee morning event, a dedicated group of Oeiras International School (OIS) parents came together to create a positive impact on the student learning experience. This gathering sparked the formation of the OIS Parent Council, a collaborative body that empowers parents to support students’ educational journeys and build stronger connections within the school community.

Purpose of the OIS Parent Council

The OIS Parent Council provides a unique opportunity for parents and guardians to actively partner with the school, working closely with teachers, staff, and school leadership to support student well-being and academic success. The Council aligns with the values of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, embracing global best practices that enrich student learning and development.

Key objectives of the OIS Parent Council include:

  • Strengthening Communication: Establishing effective channels for consistent guidance between home and school.
  • Providing Mentorship Opportunities: Enabling students to access mentorship from parents with diverse skills and life experiences.
  • Creating Community-Driven Solutions: Collaborating on initiatives that reflect the needs and ideas of the school community.

The Council does not act as a governing body or address individual concerns but focuses on broader initiatives that benefit the OIS community as a whole.

Mission

The Parents Council mission is to provide a representative voice of OIS parents and guardians in partnership with all members of the OIS community supporting the evolving needs and well-being of learners, the community and our transforming world.

How the OIS Parent Council Works

The Parent Council operates democratically, encouraging all parents to get involved. Parents may self-nominate, and representatives are elected annually to ensure a diverse and inclusive team. The Council represents the collective voice of OIS parents and is committed to working with the school to create an inspiring learning environment.

Through regular meetings and open dialogue, the Council collects feedback and ideas from parents, which are then organised and shared with school leadership to enhance the educational experience. This collaborative approach embodies the belief that “it takes a village to raise and educate a child.”
