Last September, we celebrated a very special week at OIS, One Tribe Week, as part of marking both our school’s 15th birthday and our continued focus on the importance of belonging. It was a wonderful opportunity for students across different year groups to connect, collaborate and celebrate what it means to be part of the OIS community. This was not a spectator sport (like the Mini-Olympics or Cross Country race) so we did not extend the invitation to parents. There will be more opportunities to celebrate as a whole school community in the coming weeks.
Each afternoon, different year groups were brought together in mixed-age teams to take part in a treasure hunt style activity, designed by Mr Adrian. Students worked collaboratively to solve clues, problem-solve and build friendships across year groups. They were guided and supported by their teachers, learning assistants and mentors, who encouraged teamwork and ensured that the activities ran smoothly. And of course, there was a special surprise waiting at the end of each day for all participants!

What a remarkable experience it was. The week was full of moments that captured the spirit of our community: younger students looking up to the older ones, while the older ones, in turn, found inspiration in the younger. There were Year 4 pupils confidently leading Year 9 students, older students giving piggybacks to the younger ones, and countless examples of people looking out for each other so that no one was left behind.
The campus was alive with laughter, teamwork, and a sense of healthy competition – not about being the fastest, but about being the most inclusive. Groups earned time rewards not for speed, but for ensuring everyone was involved. Students also discovered more about the history of our school and our campus, while both Administrative and Academic staff joined in with enthusiasm.

And, of course, there was ice cream – a real highlight of the week! Each flavour was thoughtfully chosen to symbolise elements of our community spirit. For example:
• Salted Caramel: A balance of sweet and salty – showing that contrasts can belong together.
• Stracciatella: smooth vanilla with chocolate flecks – celebrating uniqueness within unity, like individuals belonging to a group.
• Biscoff/Speculoos: Spiced and warming – symbolising the richness that traditions and shared stories bring to belonging.
• Vanilla: Simple, classic and universally loved – reminding us that belonging often comes from the familiar and inclusive.
• Strawberry: Comforting and homely – evoking warmth and togetherness
• Ice lollies: Light, refreshing – and dairy free – ensuring everyone feels included.

Beyond the fun, and celebrations, the week also served a deeper purpose. It was a deliberate and intentional focus on mental health and well-being, ensuring our young people genuinely feel (start to feel) they belong. Belonging reduces the risk of isolation, which we know can lead to struggles with mental health or, tragically, harmful behaviour. The responsibility to create a sense of inclusion is shared by us all – it cannot simply be told; it must be felt. Thank you to everyone who plays their part in making our school a place where everyone feels safe, connected, and valued.
