At Oeiras International School, environmental responsibility is more than a value—it is a lived experience. Recent initiatives, led by students and supported by staff and local partners, have transformed our campus river into a site of inquiry, learning and stewardship.
Launched during Action Week under the theme “Life Below Water,” the project has since grown into a long-term commitment involving biodiversity research, community outreach, and conservation efforts. Although students were unable to conduct a river clean-up during Action Week due to the breeding season of the Boga Portuguesa—a native and protected freshwater fish—they took part in an enriching session led by Orca Nation. This experience highlighted the vital role of freshwater ecosystems and their connection to ocean health.
Inspired by these reflections, students created the “River Tribe Group”—a dedicated collective focusing on the long-term care of the river. Their work includes raising awareness through educational resources, documenting native species, and engaging in active conservation practices.
In collaboration with the Divisão de Gestão Ambiental da Câmara Municipal de Oeiras, OIS students and staff will take part in a river clean-up and the planting of native vegetation—an important first step in restoring and protecting this natural habitat.
This project reflects our school’s ethos: nurturing globally-minded, environmentally-conscious citizens ready to lead positive change.
